Stablemates and era-defining rivals Denman and Kauto Star canter to the start of the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Trained at Ditcheat, Somerset, by Paul Nicholls, they won a combined twenty Grade 1 races and £5 million in prize money. Having already triumphed in the 2007 Gold Cup, Kauto Star started odds-on favourite in 2008, but lost out to Denman who entered the race unbeaten that season. In 2009, however, Kauto Star became the first horse ever to regain the Gold Cup, beating Denman into runner-up spot. This rivalry, which captivated the steeplechasing world, was made extra special by the fact that Kauto Star and Denman only ever competed against each other in the Gold Cup.
